Sensitization in Surfactants
Definition
The progressive amplification of a response following repeated administrations of a stimulus.
Related terms: respiratory sensitizer, skin sensitizer
Rationale
There was consensus that sensitization is an important attribute to consider for products that are used in direct contact with people. It was noted that surfactants are not expected to be sensitizers unless there are data to indicate otherwise. Respiratory track sensitization information was not recommended for inclusion because:
- Surfactants do not tend to be sensitizers (not reactive).
- Surfactants do not tend to be volatile.
Listing Requirements
In CleanGredients® data are required if known.
Data and Submission Guidance
Include test values if known (for example: Produces a response in 30% of test animals) and place in one of two categories:
- Evidence of sensitization by skin contact or positive results from animal tests
- No evidence of sensitization by skin contact or positive results from animal tests
